Local Food Security – Support Local Farmers

Summer has finally arrived and with it the increased excitement and passion towards the weekly abundance of fresh produce and food available from our local farms.

Buying farm-direct means you know where the food you eat is grown. It also means that the money you spend on food is recycled back into your local economy. There are many reasons to support your local producers, here are just a few:

  1. Locally grown food tastes better. Fresh picked food has less time in transit and therefore maintains the state of freshness and is packed with its intended initial nutrients.
  2. Locally grown food helps build communities. When you buy directly from the farmer you are building a relationship that provides for you as much as it does for the farmer providing for their own family.
  3. Locally grown food is good for the environment and for long term food security. Good farmers ensure that the land is well kept with minimal, if any, usage of chemicals and fertilizers. These practices can sequester carbon and ensure proper natural habitats for wildlife for generations to come.

The Farmers Market is a place where local farmers, food producers and other vendors come together in a centralized area to sell their goods to locals. In addition to the benefits listed above, attending weekly Farmers Markets means you will also find and try new things that you might not have otherwise. Kohlrabi anyone? As an added bonus, Farmers Markets allow you to be outside enjoying the sun and soak up that beneficial Vitamin D!

Many of our local farmers are struggling as a result of COVID-19.

Please do your part to help support your local farmer, which in turn will help to secure our own local food supply.
